II International Congress on ALS Research ‘Manolo Barrós’ (Manolo Barrós)

II International Congress on ALS Research ‘Manolo Barrós’ (Manolo Barrós)

On 19 June, the Queen Sofia Foundation Alzheimer Centre (Madrid) will become the epicentre of scientific debate and awareness of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) by hosting the 2nd International Congress on ALS ‘Manolo Barrós’.

Organised by CIEN (Centro de Investigación de Enfermedades Neurológicas), part of the Instituto de Salud Carlos III, in collaboration with the Queen Sofia Foundation, this congress has become a crucial milestone in the fight against a neurodegenerative disease that still has no cure.

World-renowned experts, researchers, health professionals, and associations of people and families affected by ALS will meet at this event, which seeks not only to promote the exchange of knowledge and experiences, but also to promote research and raise awareness in society about the reality of this pathology.

ALS is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the neurons involved in movement. Its symptoms lead to progressive paralysis of most muscles and life expectancy, in the vast majority of cases, is less than 5 years. It is estimated that between 4,000 and 4,500 people currently suffer from the disease in Spain.

The Congress will be chaired by Her Majesty Queen Sofia, who has shown a constant commitment to research and awareness of neurodegenerative diseases. During the event, the latest advances in ALS research will be presented and discussed, as well as strategies to tackle this disease that still lacks a cure.

The event takes place in the context of the ‘Manolo Barrós’ project, an initiative of the Queen Sofia Foundation dedicated to the search for ALS diagnostic biomarkers in extracellular vesicles. Funded by the Queen Sofia Foundation, the project will be developed by CIEN, in collaboration with the German universities of Bonn and Cologne.

Venue: Centro Alzheimer Fundación Reina Sofía (Auditorium, C/ Valderrebollo, 5. Madrid.)
