Madrid - FTD Consortium

The study CREATION OF A CLINICAL COHORTE FOR FRONTOTOTEMPORAL DEMENTIA is an ambitious project aimed at the third most frequent cause of neurodegenerative dementia in our environment after Alzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia due to Lewy bodies, but the second in subjects under 65 years of age if we take into account age.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a neurodegenerative disease that mainly affects the frontal and temporal region of the brain. Symptoms vary according to the brain region affected and the progression of the disease, but it is characterised by changes in personality, behaviour and language, and are closely related to other syndromes that involve motor or movement problems, with patients with frontotemporal dementia frequently developing motor problems during their evolution. In most cases the cause of FTD is unknown, although the genetic influence is greater than in AD.

This disease is mostly caused by two proteins and with current clinical tools it is not possible to differentiate between them. The aim of this project is to better understand the underlying mechanisms of the disease and identify possible biomarkers that allow earlier and more accurate diagnosis, analysing new technologies such as RTQUC or SIMOA. In addition, we aim to generate a well-studied cohort of patients, which will facilitate their access to clinical trials.

To achieve our goal, we will work together with all the Cognitive Impairment Care Units of Madrid's hospitals to form a working consortium.

We are committed to finding tools to improve the quality of life of people affected by FTD and we deeply appreciate the participation of all those involved.

SEARCH FOR NEW DIAGNOSTIC MARKERS FOR FRONTOTEMPORAL DEMENTIA (FTD).

We will study new diagnostic techniques such as the measurement of Tau protein by RT-QuIC of TDP-43 in extracellular vesicles and inflammatory biomarkers.

The aim of this research project is to study frontotemporal dementia from different approaches (clinical, laboratory, neuroimaging) in order to gain a detailed understanding of this entity, often with a definitive post-mortem diagnosis.

  • Where is the study being carried out? Community of Madrid.
  • Who participates?
  • The Madrid - FTD Consortium is a study group made up of specialists in cognitive and behavioural neurology from hospitals in the CAM and the Centre for Research into Neurological Diseases.
  • Duration of the study? 2 and a half years (recruitment)
  • Who is it aimed at? Patients with a diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia.
  • Where will the study take place?
  • Information about the study will be provided by your neurologist and after assessing the suitability, the study will be carried out at the CIEN facilities in a single visit to the centre.
