We celebrate Science Week at CIEN!
)
Last Friday, November 15, the Center for Neurological Disease Research (CIEN) successfully celebrated Science Week, an event dedicated to bringing science and research closer to the community. This year, the central theme of our activities was “Be a Volunteer for a Day in a Neurodegenerative Disease Research Project,” a unique opportunity for participants to dive into the fascinating world of neuroscience and experience firsthand what it’s like to collaborate in cutting-edge scientific projects.
During the activity, our researchers guided attendees through various stations where they could learn about and experience the latest advances in the study and diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases. Here are some of the highlights:
Neuropathology: Getting to Know the Brain Through Research
At this station, participants immersed themselves in the work of neuropathologists, who explained the processes and techniques they use to study neurodegenerative diseases. Visitors had the opportunity to observe samples of human brains and learn how brain tissues are analyzed to detect pathologies, such as Alzheimer’s disease.
Laboratory: Science in Action with Agarose Gels
Attendees also participated in a hands-on laboratory activity where they were shown how agarose gels are used, a fundamental technique in genetic research. Volunteers had the chance to see how DNA fragments are separated and analyzed, using gels that were stained with vibrant colors, providing a visual experience that brought participants closer to the tools researchers use in their daily work.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging: 3D Brain Imaging
In this activity, visitors learned how magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allows for detailed brain images, essential for diagnosing neurodegenerative diseases. Volunteers heard the characteristic noise of the MRI machine while watching real-time sequences of images of normal brains and those showing signs of atrophy, helping them understand how this technology aids in detecting and monitoring pathologies like Alzheimer’s disease.
Clinic: Experiencing Diagnosis in Real-Time
One of the most enriching activities was the experiential session, where participants could step into the shoes of healthcare professionals conducting clinical diagnoses in neuroscience. Through a simulation, attendees closely experienced how a clinical evaluation is carried out. Additionally, the SCAP-AD project, a pioneering study on the early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, was presented, highlighting the importance of participation in scientific studies to improve treatment and care for patients.
A Resounding Success
The event was a resounding success, with active participation from students, professionals, and the general public, who felt inspired by the possibility of contributing as “volunteers for a day” in CIEN’s research projects. Attendees showed great interest in the topics discussed and appreciated the opportunity to get a closer look at the work of our researchers in the field of neurodegenerative diseases.
At CIEN, we would like to thank everyone who participated in this special event and highlight the commitment of our researchers and volunteers, whose efforts make it possible for us to make progress every day in the fight against neurodegenerative diseases.
Thank you for being part of Science Week at CIEN and for helping us spread knowledge and research in neuroscience!
