Organised by CIEN (Center for Research on Neurological Diseases), part of the Instituto de Salud Carlos III, in collaboration with the Reina Sofia Foundation, this congress is created as a crucial milestone in the fight against a neurodegenerative disease still without a cure.
World-renowned experts, researchers, health professionals, and associations of people and families affected by ALS, come together at this annual event, which since 2024 seeks not only to promote the exchange of knowledge and experiences, but also to promote research and raise awareness in society about the reality of this pathology.
ALS is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the neurons involved in movement. Its symptoms lead to progressive paralysis of most muscles and life expectancy, in the vast majority of cases, is less than 5 years. It is estimated that between 4,000 and 4,500 people currently suffer from the disease in Spain.
The Congress, chaired by Her Majesty Queen Sofia, who has shown a constant commitment to research and awareness of neurodegenerative diseases, is the ideal meeting point to present and discuss the latest advances in ALS research, as well as strategies to tackle this disease that still lacks a cure.
The event takes place in the context of the ‘Manolo Barrós’ project, an initiative of the Reina Sofia Foundation dedicated to the search for ALS diagnostic biomarkers in extracellular vesicles. Funded by the Reina Sofia Foundation, the project will be developed by CIEN, in collaboration with the German universities of Bonn and Cologne.
