The first edition of the International Congress on Research and Innovation in Neurodegenerative Diseases (CIIIEN) was held on 21 September 2013, coinciding with World Alzheimer's Day. This important scientific forum was promoted by the CIEN and was strongly supported from the outset by the Reina Sofia Foundation, whose support has been maintained to date, reaffirming its commitment to research in neurodegenerative diseases and international scientific cooperation.
CIIIEN consolidated the unification of the two main scientific congresses on neurodegenerative diseases in Spain: the International Symposium on Advances in Alzheimer's Disease, promoted annually by the Queen Sofia Foundation and the CIEN, and the CIBERNED Scientific Forum. The merger of these events was a significant step forward in the creation of a more efficient operational structure within the leading institutions in research in this field.
Although CIIIEN held its eighth and last edition in 2021 due to the restructuring of CIBERNED within CIBER, its legacy has been maintained and evolved. From 2022 onwards, this meeting has adopted a new format: first as the Global Neuro Summit 2020/22 and, from 2023, as the International Congress on Neurodegenerative Diseases. Under this new name, the congress continues to consolidate itself as a reference forum for internationally renowned experts, favouring scientific collaboration and the generation of knowledge in a field where cooperation between institutions and at a global level is essential for the advancement of research.
