The CIEN Foundation (Center for Research on Neurological Diseases) and the Queen Sofía Foundation present the 3rd edition of the Memorables Film Festival, a film festival dedicated to showcasing and promoting the creation and distribution of short films that explore Alzheimer's disease from a human perspective.

The festival aims to shed light on how Alzheimer’s affects those who live with, suffer from, or witness its impact, including their families, while offering a positive perspective on their situation. For Miguel Calero, Scientific Director of the CIEN Foundation, this project plays "a crucial role" in raising awareness about Alzheimer's through the "emotional impact of the disease, not only on patients but also on their families, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and even scientists." Meanwhile, María Ángeles Pérez, the foundation’s director, encourages filmmakers residing in Spain to submit their works so that “together, we can convey that Alzheimer’s does not only affect patients, but it completely disrupts the daily lives of their families and caregivers.”

The 3rd Memorables Film Festival will also address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, a virus that has particularly affected elderly individuals, including those with Alzheimer’s, creating an especially challenging situation.

Official Section and Audience Award

A jury composed of members from the Carlos III Health Institute, the Queen Sofía Foundation, the CIEN Foundation, CEAFA, and distinguished professionals from the Spanish film industry will evaluate the short films in the Official Section. Entries must have a maximum duration of ten minutes and be fiction or documentary films focused on Alzheimer’s in any of its dimensions, including its impact on patients' lives, scientific, medical, or social aspects. Finalists will compete for first, second, and third prizes, with cash awards of up to €2,000.

Additionally, there will be a special category in which the audience will vote for their favorite short film. The awards will be presented during the gala in December, adhering to all necessary health and safety measures.

Beyond the short film competition, the gala will feature various activities related to the festival’s theme, including talks, panel discussions, exhibitions, and sessions with experts in the field, as well as with individuals who have personally or indirectly experienced Alzheimer’s disease.

Festival registration is free, and the submission deadline is September 30. Interested participants can review the guidelines for the 3rd Memorables Film Festival and submit their applications below.

The Social Impact of Alzheimer's: A Key Theme in Previous Editions

The 2nd edition of the Memorables Film Festival featured short films covering the family drama of Alzheimer’s and the daily lives of healthcare and social workers. Given the health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, several films were produced during the lockdown, adapting to the new reality that has profoundly affected elderly individuals.

Alizhemer, a short film directed by Liteo Pedregal from Ceuta, won the Gold Neuronita in the 2nd edition of the festival. The Silver Neuronita was awarded to Olvidé no quererte, directed by Carine Nonnast Fornieles, while the Bronze Neuronita went to Adiós hija, directed by Olga María Gorgoja. Film and science professionals, including film director Alfonso Albacete, actress Mª Luisa San José, and Margarita Blázquez, Deputy Director of Networks and Cooperative Research Centers at ISCIII, were among the jury members for the 2nd edition of the Memorables Film Festival.
